In 2025, Proton, the Swiss-based company determined to make privacy the default setting on the internet, release Lumo, their AI assistant. Unlike rivals like ChatGPT and Gemini, Lumo features zero-access encryption, never logs conversations or trains on your data.

At the end of June Proton announce Lumo 2.0, their most significant update to Lumo since launch. Here are some of the highlights.

Advanced reasoning models

Lumo now features two different modes.

  • Fast mode prioritizes giving the quickest response possible.
  • Thinking mode is optimized for more compex inquiries that require deeper analysis and multi-step reasoning; this capability was not offered by Lumo until now.

Lumo 2.0 is up to 76% faster than Lumo 1.4 on everyday inquiries.

More complex inquiries require more time to process, but Lumo provides a visibile "thinking state" which lets you see how Lumo is working through the problem.

Lumo 2.0 has much stronger web search capabilities, allowing Lumo to search for the most up to date information to provide more accurate and complete answers.

Image recogntion and generation

Up until now, Lumo was a language-model only AI. Now, Lumo has added the capability to work with images.

  • Image generation By providing prompts or even a rough sketch, Lumo can generate images from scratch.
  • Image editing Upload an existing image and Lumo can help you edit it to be just the way you like.
  • Image analysis After uploading an image, Lumo can detect and identify what is in the image.

Lumo Memory

While Lumo keeps your conversations private, it can still learn about your preferences, working style and keep track of ongoing context. You control what level of retention Lumo has, but as with all Proton products, your conversations remain protected by the same zero-access encryption built-in across the Proton ecosystem.

Lumo 2.0 also introduces custom Lumos assistants, which you can design for specific tasks. For example, you can build a rewsearch assistant that structures answers the same way you would. Once you set the parameters for Lumo, you don't need to do so again.

Is there a cost to Lumo 2.0?

As with all Proton products, there is a free version of Lumo. Paid versions for personal and business uers are also available; details of pricing can be found here.
